How To Read A Research Paper Effectively

Use the structure of the paper and skim read sections or use AI to help you to find information of interest. What you will need: A strategy to find and collate specific information to review. Systematically find, read and question the information. So now you know what you are looking for and where to look, it’s time to start reading.

  • How do you approach reading a paper? I start by reading the abstract. Then, I skim the introduction and flip through the article to look at the figures. I try to identify the most prominent one or two figures, and I really make sure I understand what's going on in them. Then, I read the conclusion/summary.

  • Once you understand why the research has been performed, move to the Results section and examine the figures. Try to interpret them for yourself, and then compare your interpretations with the legends and main text.
